Questions About The Tryouts

Our Most Frequently Asked Question: What is the format for the tryouts?
A: Players arrive at tryouts and register (or register on-line in ADVANCE - PREFERRED). Coaches will organize the players and take them out on the fields, warm the players up, and then start playing soccer games. The players are constantly evaluated through a series of mini-games, moved from field to field and grouped with players of similar abilities so that erratic scoring can be removed from the final results. The Division moved to this system of tryout ratings due to numerous concerns that e.g., one coach rated all players too high while another was less “generous.” The current system focuses coaches on the players on the field for the final game(s) and the ratings a coach may determine are defined by the field. In this system, not all coaches will see all players. Each coach is charged with assessing the talent on his/her field only.
We do not generally put the players in lines to assess shooting, or receiving, etc. as we once did. We found this system to be problematic for the evaluators and the players with players standing in lines for extended periods. The small-sided game approach that we used is used in all higher-level tryouts (Travel, ODP, etc.). Players are assessed playing the game, as they should be.
